What A View!!!!!

TV Tower

Only one last thing to do in Munich, lets go to the top of the tower and take in the view.

Munich Olympics

If you are older than 45 then the Munich Olympics were a defining moment in the modern world. At an event that was supposed to erase the memory of the 1936 Berlin racist fiasco the "Happy Games" were overtaken by the violence of the the Middle East. It is incredible to think that on this roof the West German Police carried out their operations to rescue the Israeli athletes and the Palestinian terrorist watched it live on telly like the rest of the world thanks to the cameras on the TV tower.
It is a sensetive location as the locals who live here get sick of people taking photos of therir humble public housing flat but I suppose that that is history.

Rennaisance Masterpiece

The group was also impressed by the whole building. A masterpiece of stucco and gilt. We had hoped to visit the famous crypt, burial place for the Wittelsbach Dynasty, it was closed.

Werevever you go you need to do something the for next time!

Smoke

A feature of the Mass was the use of incense. At every opportunity out would come the 11 Altar Boys/Girls aged 4-16 with canticles and candles and fill the Rennaisance Church with the sweet smell of smoke. The glorious sunlight making an unbelievable spectacle.

Sunday Mass

9.00am Sunday Morning found us at Mass at St Michaels Jesuit Church. Wkipedia says that the Counter-Reformation began here.. so it must be true.... Our kids were brilliant. The Mass was in German and they even sat politely through a 35 minute homily!!!!!!
We loved the subtle differences between Australian and German Mass. At Communion everyone, the Church was packed, rushed to the front in a disorganised rable to recieve the host. We were treated at the end to a fabulous Bach organ recital. It doesn't get much better than this.

In bed at 10.00 as tommorow will be an emotional day at Dachau Concentration Camp.

One Sad Cottbus Supporter

One student foolish wore red and supported Cottbus. Here he is regreting his choice.

Popular Culture

.....or a trip to the Allianz Arena to see TSV 1860 Munchen play Cottbus. The stadium has hosted World Cup Semi's and Champions League Finals. It hold about 70,000 and is known locally as the giant plastic ring. At night it glows with any colour they choose. For the record TSV beat Cottbus 4-0 must have been the Aussie support team.

Afternoon Choice

In the afternoon the group split into two. The options were a tour of Munich's world class collection of High culuture museums or ......

Outside of Theatinerkirche

The yellow building is the Theatinerkirche.

More Theatinerkirche

Theatinerkiche

Everyone was blown away by this Church. Outside it is yellow, inside it is white, white and more white. Munich is close to Italy and this is a High Baroque from the 17th century.

Sophie Scholl

Sophie Scholl and her brother Hans are now celebrated German heroes. In the 1940's they formed the White Rose and distrubuted anti-nazi leaflets at the Munich University. They were caught and beheaded. Their memorial is stone copies of the leaflets embeded in the cobbles at the University square now called Sophie Schollplatz

Feldherrnhalle/Shirkers Alley

This is the Feldhernnhalle. This was an infamous site for National Socialism. in 1923 Hitler and the NAZI's tried to seize government in Barvaria. The NAZIS marched from a Beer Hall and near this site the Barvarian Police tried to stop the demonstration. There was a riot and Hitler was arrested. After he seized power this spot was glorified into a state shrine. When you walked past you had to give the NAZI salute. At the rear of the building was an alley that avoiders used to not salute. It became known as Shirkers Alley and was a major site for resistance to NAZism.

Day 3 German Culture

A theme on Saturday was German Culture. We found all the Kings, Princes and Electors in Glorious technicolour at the Palace

Hofbrauhaus

The food has been traditional hearty Barvarian fare, stews, potato, veal, soup. Delicious and filling.

Tram Ride Home

We have been using Tram 19 to visit places in Munich as it goes past our front door. It is still hard to get 37 of us on in 20 secs. Plus a few have fallen over as it stops and starts. Sharni knows to hang on.
