Fort Douaumont

Verdun was protected by a series of Forts, the most famous being Douaumont. It was taken by the Germans and then retaken by the French.
Both armies had terrible experiences in this place, it was described as being trapped like a rat. It was overcrowded and many soldiers suffered from terrible shellshock. While the Germans had control a magazine accidently exploded and 800 men died.
